installing tor and vidalia
Ok what is tor “Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. It also enables software developers to create new communication tools with built-in privacy features. Tor provides the foundation for a range of applications that allow organizations and individuals to share information over public networks without compromising their privacy.”
Installing tor in Ubuntu is easy you can either just install it from the software center or download it directly from the tor website. One of the main ideas of tor is to keep the INTERNET open there is countries in the world that ban people from using things like You-tube, Google, Facebook or they manipulate the results so all you see is what they want you to see, tor is slower then just surfing the net but if there is no option it does work and has worked for years. Tor was originally set up for the us navy and the primary purpose of protecting government communications. Today, it is used every day for a wide variety of purposes by normal people, the military, journalists, law enforcement officers, activists, and many others.
Now if you have bad intentions tor really isn't for you there is better options for that but we are not going into that whole argument. Now after we install tor we need to make sure that we also set up our browser to go threw the tor network. There is a 2 ways to do this one is to manually set it up the other is called a tor button. I like a program called Vidalia it basically shows you what is going on in tor and makes trouble shooting easy. Now if you have tried everything and nothing is working you can always download “Tails” it a live usb that you just plug in and run everything is preconfigured and will just work. There is also the tor browser witch if your still on windows works good also ok so lets get started
first thing as always make sure your system is up to date “ sudo apt-get update “ then system settings details then update if needed. Ok lets check the version in the software center “ vidalia 0.2.20-1”
then we go to the website and check the newest version “The most recent stable release is 0.2.20”
Well that looks close and since I am lazy. We will try the software center. I did read it the comments that it is outdated and will ask to update as soon as its loaded. But we are going to see if it will update after I install it. Click install while installing you will need to configure a few things first is a pop up
it will ask if you want to install a user group “yes” now this is going to install tor automatically there again I'm lazy. Ok that should be it for that part. You should see a onion in your dash bar click it, you will get an error. Needs to be run as root open terminal type “sudo killall tor” then type “sudo vidalia”
reboot and it works sure enough this is the error
The currently installed version of Tor is out of date or no longer recommended. Please visit the Tor website to download the latest version
then directs us to the website to download the latest, but it works :) ok so now lets see if we can just update it. We are going to go with option 2 it should update. The part we need is to add it to the sources
here is how
deb http://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org <DISTRIBUTION> main
now were the distribution is we will put in the version we are using
Ubuntu 12.04 is "precise"
Ubuntu 11.10 is "oneiric"
Ubuntu 11.04 is "natty"
Ubuntu 10.10 or Trisquel 4.5 is "maverick"
anything older upgrade already :)
I am using 12.10 so mine will be deb http://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org quantal main
on the website for tor they dont show the quantal option. But it should be there.
So open terminal and type “ sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list “ and add this to the bottom
“ ## tor deb not part of Ubuntu
deb http://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org quantal main “
save and close gedit
now we need to add the gpg key used to sign the package
“ gpg --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --recv 886DDD89 “
“ gpg --export A3C4F0F979CAA22CDBA8F512EE8CBC9E886DDD89 | sudo apt-key add - “
you should get an OK
now update the sources
sudo apt-get update
ok now lets see if tor will update
now go to system settings details and let it check for updates
install updates and if you look at the details tor is there install
reboot and tor should be the latest :)
ok now at this point you have it working now you need to run firefox threw tor I like the tor button as stated above it is just easy and allows me to shut it off for normal browsing. It will state that you can't turn it off just disable the plug in to surf normal.
Open firefox click here
allow plugin install plugin restart firefox
you will get a pop up
Important Torbutton Information!
Torbutton is now always enabled.
Click on the Torbutton for more information.
Just click ok then when you dont want to use it just disable the plugin
now you should be good to go its normal that you get a pop up sometimes from tor asking if you want to redirect.
If you would like to make sure you are using tor just go here
to shut down all of tor just type sudo killall tor other wise it is running in the background
